Polyunsaturated fatty acids in drug therapy
Polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential to the human body both as building blocks and as signaling molecules regulating important processes like energy metabolism and inflammation. Research the last 30 years has shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids regulate these processes by activating a variety of important receptors like G-protein-coupled receptors, cannabinoid receptors and nuclear receptors such as the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). Many of these receptors are validated drug targets for metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
Therapeutic targets
There is strong evidence in the scientific literature that low grade inflammation and chronic oxidative stress play major roles in the development of many sight threatening eye diseases like age related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, cataracts and glaucoma. In order to develop effective drug molecules for treatment of severe eye diseases Biozep is targeting biochemical pathways and receptors known to be involved in inflammatory processes and the metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS). |
